NBA GREEN WEEK WITH SPURS

This week the NBA partner up with Natural Recourses Defense Counsel to (NRDC) for the third annual green week in an effort to generate awareness and funds to protecting the environment. Players and teams got involved to participate in taking care of the environment. The Natural Recourses Defense Counsel (NRDC) is an international nonprofit organization with more than 1.3 million members and online activist. Since 1970 they have been around protecting the environment.

During the NBA Green Week, the Spurs are encouraging fans to participate in greening efforts through promotions and initiatives at the April 3 and 6 games, including:
• April 6, 10,000 fans will receive a coupon for a free Peak Saver Thermostat, courteous of CPS Energy.
Spurs players will wear 100 percent organic cotton adidas shooting shirts featuring the NBA Green logo and in-game promotions and messaging will be played throughout both games with tips on how to be environmentally friendly and responsible. The Spurs are also proud of the environmentally friendly steps the AT&T Center has instilled to be one of the greenest arenas in the USA. To date, green initiatives include:
• 100% wind powered arena – operating the building on clean, renewable wind energy
• Installed water-saving fixtures throughout the public and private areas in the building
• Cooling towers use recycled water – combined with the water-saving fixtures – AT&T Center will save 13.2 million gallons of water annually.
• Recycling bins for plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paper are dispersed throughout the executive offices and public areas at the AT&T Center.

NBA PLAYOFFS

The NBA playoffs are almost underway with 5 regular season games left. So far in the eastern conference the Chicago Bulls concede the number one spot with 56 wins and 20 loses , they are 2 and ½ games ahead of the Miami Heat who have 54 wins and 23 loses, followed by the Boston Celtics with 53 wins and 23 loses, the Orlando Magic’s fall in to 4th place with 48 wins and 29 loses, the Atlanta Hawks are 5th with 44 and 33 loses and still may have a chance to move to 4th place, Philadelphia has 40 wins and 37 loses, New York is 7th with 38 wins and 38 loses, and Indiana the only team under the 500 mark to make the playoffs with 35 wins and 43 loses. In the western conference the San Antonio Spurs have remained on top of the list clinching the number one spot with 58 wins and 19 loses, followed b the La Lakers, with 55 wins and 21 loses, the Dallas Mavericks with 53 wins and 24 loses, in fourth place is Oklahoma City with 50 wins and 26 loses, 5th spot taken by the Denver Nuggets with 47 wins and 29 loses, followed by Portland Trail Blazers with 45 wins and 32 loses, New Orleans falls into 7th place with 44 wins and 33 loses and last but not least the 8th spot taken by the Memphis Grizzlies, the Memphis Grizzlies are only 3 games ahead of the Houston Rockets.

NBA

The National Basketball Association is one of the most pre-eminent sports league in North America and worldwide. The league was founded in New York City on June, 6, 1946 as the Basketball Association America (BAA) and later on changed to the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1949. The league consists of 30 teams, 29 of them happen to be from the United States and 1 is from Canada; the Toronto Raptors. The league has had major impact and influence on many young individuals throughout generations all across the globe. For some places like USA and Canada it has become a lifestyle to be involved in a sport such as basketball. Many people tune in to the NBA to watch their favorite teams play which involves being associated with their city, and many watch to see their favorite players. It has become a tradition in North America for people to be involved in beating on teams associated in the NBA. Beating takes place during playoffs season which is the most exciting time to watch the NBA because teams compete for the championship. In the playoffs 16 out of 30 teams are allowed to compete, this is based on the top 8 teams with the most wins in their conferences, the NBA has two conferences; the eastern conference which has teams from major cities in the eastern North American area such as Boston, Miami, New York etc. the western conference are teams that come from the major cities in the western part of North America, cities such as San Antonio, LosAngeles, Phoenix etc.

San Antonio Texas

The seventh largest city in the United States and the second in Texas, with a population of 1.3 million, the state is located southwest in the United State of America, and the home of the San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio was the fourth fastest growing large city in America from 2000 to 2006, and was fifth fastest growing from 2007-2008. The city was named San Antonio de Padua after a famous Spanish man stopped by in 1691; he was famous for Spanish missions. San Antonio lies near the western edge of humid subtropical climate zone. The weather is dry and humid during the summer and during winter it’s cool and cold in the nights and warm and rainy in the spring fall. Over twenty million people visit the city and its attractions every year, one of the major attraction is the river walk which is lined up with restaurants bar and shops. San Antonio has many arenas for sports such as Alamodome, the Hemis Fair Arena and the AT&T Center which is the home of the San Antonio Spurs and also the home of San Antonio Silver Stars for the Women’s National Basketball League. San Antonio public transportation is fairly operated well with bus and streetcars with a monthly pass the cost $30 US maki

ng it the most priced large transit authority in the USA. The city is runs under a council manager form of government. The city is also divided into 10 council districts designed to equal population distribution between all districts.

Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan born as Timothy Theodor Duncan on April 25th 1976 in St Croix US Virgin Islands. In his early years he started off as an extremely well swimmer where he went on and broke several of US records at the ages of 13 and 14, his plans were to go to the Olympics to win a gold medal but eventually those big swimming dreams came to an end after a tragic incident that took place in his home state of Virgin Islands after Hurricane Hugo came and crashed into St Croix the area where he was living. Amongst the tragic the swimming pool where he practiced became destroyed filled with debris where he was forced to train in the ocean. Tim faced a major challenge due to his fear of sharks, and also another major love to Tim was the loss of his mother which changed Tim’s whole life around and left swimming for good. Tim was later on introduced to basketball by his brother-in-law, and eventually found a new love for a new sport and took his skills to St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School where he averaged 25 points per game. Tim was offered the scholarships from Three schools—the University of Hartford, University of Delaware and Providence University but chose to go to A fourth school, Wake Forest. After college Tim was selected 3rd overall in the first round pick by the San Antonio Spurs, where he joined a major organization lead by a great team leader David Robinson and coach Gregg Popovich and two years later Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs went on to win their first ever Championship. After David Robinson retired in 2003 Tim Duncan became the official leader of the San Antonio Spurs and led the spurs to win two more without David Robinson and Tim has recently broken many records of the Spurs Franchise and continues to demonstrate great leadership for the San Antonio Spurs.

The Championships seasons

1. 1998 1999: The San Antonio Spurs took on the New York Knicks in the NBA finals where they won their first Championship lead by David Robinson. During the season they started off slow but when the spurs got their chemistry together they became unstoppable with great inside prescience of the dynamic duo of David Robinson and Tim Duncan named the twin towers. Duncan was named to the All-NBA First Team for the second year in a row. He was the only NBA player to finish in the top 10 in scoring (21.7 ppg, sixth), rebounds (11.4 rpg, fifth), blocks (2.52, seventh) and field goal percentage (.495, 10th).. A great point guard and also a great team leader Avery Johnson who was also was responsible for making the game winning shot against the New York Knicks to win their first ever NBA championship. The championship year made the spurs also the first ever ABA team to win the NBA title.
2. 2002-2003: The Spurs became champs again defeating the New Jersey Nets in game 6, it was their second championship and also a retirement for the franchise leader David Robinson it was a very emotional game for the spurs because they were trailing throughout the whole game and had to make a comeback to win in the 4th quarter.
3. 2004-2005: The Spurs once again found themselves the dominant team in the west this time they took on the defending champions the Detroit Pistons. It was a very epic battle; the two teams went to game 7 where the spurs came out on top of the game.
4. 2006-2007: The spurs went on to take the underdogs the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Spurs swept the Cleveland Cavaliers 4 games to 0 and earned their 4th ring. Tony Parker was named the finales MVP.
